DWYSYWD – Career Advice to Live By

Posted: November 2, 2010 in Leadership

The best career advice I have ever received can be summed up in seven small letters.

D.W.Y.S.Y.W.D.

Do What You Say You Will Do

It’s an easy formula for gaining a reputation as a credible, reliable individual.  Tell someone you’ll send them an email by 5pm on Friday?  Send the email by 5pm on Friday.   If you say the project will be done at the end of the day.  Make sure it’s done by the end of the day.    It’s that simple.

As I look at former colleagues who have made a lasting impression on me, it’s usually the ones who followed this rule. Not the most charismatic, or even the most talented,  but simply the ones who simply made an effort to stick to their word.

If you’re looking to make a good impression in your internship or as a new profession, make sure you DWYSYWD.  It’s just that simple (and just that hard).
